Military must strive to defend democracy
Governor Abdullahi Adamu has called on the
Nigerian military to support the democratic process in Nigeria. Governor
Adamu made this call while receiving the General Officer Commanding, 3rd
Armoured Division, Jos at a courtesy call.
The
Commanding officer who is on a tour of units under his commanded visited
Governor Adamu in the office as part of the schedules for the tour. Governor
Adamu used the occasion to commend the cordial relationship existing between
the state government and the division. He said Nasarawa state would always
identify with the aspirations of the division.
Governor Adamu commended the men of the Division for their
role in restoring peace to the southern senatorial district which was
enmeshed in crisis late last year. Aside from this, the men have also
curtailed the activities of men of the underworld and bandits as well as
exhibited a high sense of discipline. He therefore implored them to continue
in their peace-keeping efforts.
Earlier the
GOC, Major-General Joseph Owonubi intimated the Governor on the fact of his
tour. He said it was essential for him to go round all the units of the
command to familiarize himself with the forces. He said having been posted
to the division just two weeks ago, it was necessary to complement the oral
brief he had received with a physical assessment of the facilities at the
disposal of his men. He thanked the government and people of Nasarawa state
for the support given to the division and emphasized that peace and
stability were an essential factor of a thriving democracy. He therefore
pledged the loyalty of the men of the division to the present democratic
administration.
