Governor Adamu Tasks Religious Leaders
Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, has called for joint efforts
between the government and religious bodies to improve the living standard of
Nigerians. Governor Adamu made this call Wednesday, May 02, 2001, when the
Catholic Bishop of Lafia Diocese, Most Reverend Mathew Ishaya Audu, paid him a
courtesy call at the Government house Lafia.
The Governor specifically urged religious leaders to emphasize the need for
peaceful co-existence among their followers. He said peace was the basis for
achieving socio-economic development, which will improve the people’s standard
of living.
Governor Adamu enjoined adherents of the various religions in the country to
develop understanding and respect for each other’s faith. He said God has a
purpose for making mankind to be followers of the various religions; otherwise
He would have made us to be followers of one religion.
Governor Adamu then commended the Church in Nigeria for its contribution to
the promotion of and development of Western education, as well as the provision
of health care services to the people.
He also commended the Church for its involvement in direct community
development, pointing out that this will facilitate rapid socio-economic
development.
Earlier, the Most Rev. Mathew Ishaya Audu commended Governor Adamu for the
laudable achievement of his administration in the education and health sectors.
Reverend Audu said the rehabilitation of schools, hospitals and health
centres by the Governor Adamu administration has rekindled hope among the
people.
He assured the Governor that the Catholic Church would do everything required
to assist the state government in its determination to improve the lives of the
people. He said the Church stands as a partner in progress and not rivals to the
government.
Reverend Audu emphasized the need for the Church and government to compliment
each other as partners for the common good and interest of the people. According
to him, that would be the only way to promote true justice, peace, harmony and
integral human development.
The Bishop was accompanied to the Government house by a delegation of church
priests and officials, while members of the state executive council witnessed
the occasion.
