Governor Adamu urges Nigerian youths to consolidate the gains of
democracy
Governor
Abdullahi Adamu has urged Nigerian youths to consolidate the gains of
Nigeria’s nascent democracy. He made this call on Thursday, May 31, 2001
while addressing members of the National Youth Services Corps [NYSC] posted
to Nasarawa State for their national service. The occasion was the official
swearing-in ceremony of the second tier batch of corps members at the NYSC
orientation camp in Keffi.
Governor Adamu urged the youth to
allow the lessons of the orientation camp permeate the entire facet of their
life in the camp and thereafter. He said the lessons of discipline and
self-sacrifice they will learn form the camp should serve as a guiding
principle for whatever they hoped to achieve in the course of their national
service.
The orientation camp for the new
batch of corps members coming at a period when Nigeria was celebrating two
years of democracy, Governor Adamu noted, gave them a vantage position to
enlighten the rural people about the poverty eradication and other
programmes of the present administration. He therefore urged them to embark
on rural development programmes which will be rewarded by the state
government.
Earlier, the State Director of the
NYSC, Mrs. Philomena Imohe, stated that the orientation camp would last for
three weeks. The intent was to prepare the corps members for life in the
rural areas. She stated that 582 corps members were registered for the
present orientation camp. They are made up of 349 males and 233 females. She
stated that corps members were contributing their quota in the areas of
health, education and agriculture.
Members of the state executive
council, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and top government
officials attended the ceremony.
